The merciful and saving God. And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city (Genesis 19:15). And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the Lord being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city (Genesis 19:16). And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed (Genesis 19:17). The wages of sin. And the Lord said, because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous (Genesis 18:20); I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know (Genesis 18:21). And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the Lord (Genesis 18:22). And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground (Genesis 19:1); And he said, Behold now, my Lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways, And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night (Genesis 19:2). And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat (Genesis 19:3). But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compressed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter (Genesis 19:4): And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? Bring them out unto us, that we may know them (Genesis 19:5). And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him (Genesis 19:6). And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly (Genesis 19:7). Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof (Genesis 19:8). And they said, stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now we will deal worse with thee, than with them, and they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door (Genesis 19:9). But the man put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut the door (Genesis 19:10). And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they weared themselves to find the door (Genesis 19:11). And the men said unto Lot, hast thou here any besides? Son-in-law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place (Genesis 19:12): For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the Lord; and the Lord hath sent us to destroy it (Genesis 19:13). And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law (Genesis 19:14). And the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city (Genesis 19:15). And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord (Genesis 19:18): Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hath shown unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die (Genesis 19:19). Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live (Genesis 19:20). And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken (Genesis 19:21). Haste thee escape thither; for I cannot do anything till thou be come thither, Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar (Genesis 19:22). The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar (Genesis 19:23). Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven (Genesis 19:24). And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground (Genesis 19:25). But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt (Genesis 19:26). Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. (Luke 24:1) And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. (Luke 24:2) And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. (Luke 24:3) And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: (Luke 24:4) And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, why seek ye the living among the dead? (Luke 24:5) He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, (Luke 24:6) Saying, the Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. (Luke 24:7) And they remembered his words, (Luke 24:8) And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest. (Luke 24:9) It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles. (Luke 24:10) And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not. (Luke 24:11) Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass. (Luke 24:12) And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about three-score furlongs. (Luke 24:13) And they talked together of all these things which had happened. (Luke 24:14) And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them, (Luke 24:15) But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. (Luke 24:16) and he said unto them, what manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? (Luke 24:17) And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? (Luke 24:18) And he said unto them, what things? and they said unto him, concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: (Luke 24:19) And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. (Luke 24:20) But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. (Luke 24:21) Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre; (Luke 24:22) And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive. (Luke 24:23) And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the woman had said; but him they saw not. (Luke 24:24) Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: (Luke 24:25) Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? (Luke 24:26) And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. (Luke 24:27) And they drew nign unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. (Luke 24:28) But they constrained him, saying, abide with us: for it is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. (Luke 24:29) And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. (Luke 24:30) and their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. (Luke 24:31) And they said one to another, did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? (Luke 24:32) And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, (Luke 24:33) Saying, the Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon. (Luke 24:34) And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread. (Luke 24:35) And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, peace be unto you (Luke 24:36), but they were terrified and affrighted, and suppose they had seen a spirit. (Luke 24:37) and he said why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? (Luke 24:38) Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. (Luke 24:39) And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet (Luke 24:40) And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? (Luke 24: 41) and they gave him a piece of boilded fish, and of honeycomb. (Luke 24:42) And he took it, and did eat before them. (Luke 24:43) And he said unto them, these are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in psalms, concerning me. (Luke 24:44) Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, (Luke 24:45) And said unto them, thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: (Luke 24:46) And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. (Luke 24:47) And ye are witnesses of these things. (Luke 24:48) And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem until ye be endued with power from on high. (Luke 24:49) And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. (Luke 24:50) And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was departed from them, and carried up into heaven. (Luke 24:51) And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy: (Luke 24:52) And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen. (Luke 24:53) Jesus know they did not believe with their hearts. This was was not Jesus, according to their thoughts (Luke 24:6; 24:15,16 ; John 20:9)! The disciples were terrified, frightened, and troubled in their heart (Luke 24:37, 38); in the minds and hearts of the disciples, Jesus was dead and what they saw was a spirit (Luke 24:34). Jesus provided assurance for his disciples, that we may not have, he said, Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have (Luke 24:39). Jesus is not by our side physically, but even though he is not physically with us; after all, it was of necessity that he go away and leave us as he did the disciples (Luke 23:46); and although, we cannot have the assurance, as the disciples that saw him, and the places where the nails were in his hands and his feet (Luke 24:40), our faith is necessary. It first appears we are on our own; Matthew 16 states, from that time forth, began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day (verse 21); it is also a fact, he is here when we need him. The scripture provides important examples to increase our faith in spite of many things appear to put space between us and Jesus: in Matthew 14, it reads, And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away (verse 22) and also in Matthew 14 it reads, And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone (verse 23). In Matthew 14:14, 15, 19, Jesus feeds the five thousand men, besides women and children (Matthew 14: 21) and then sends them away (Matthew 14:22,23) and goes into the mountain to pray (verse 23). Jesus is not always with us, yet he is always there for us when we need him; he sent the five thousand men, besides women and children away (Matthew 14: 21), but not hungry, but filled with food he made to multiply out of two fishes and five loaves (Matthew 14:20). After the five thousand had been fed with the two fishes and the five Loaves (Matthew 14:19), Jesus compelled his followers and trainee’s to get into a ship, and to cross over to the other side, while he sent the crowd to their own places (Matthew 14:22). Before Jesus followed his disciple, he went up into the mountain to pray (Matthew 14:23) and with the disciples all sent ahead, Jesus was alone (Matthew 14:23); the bible does not state how long they were apart, but by the time, he had finished praying, the ship was in the midst of the sea (Matthew 14:24). Jesus was now separated from his disciples by the sea and the ship now tossed by the wind which was not calm and not ideal for the ship; the wind was tossing the ship to and fro (Matthew 14:24). Jesus will show up when we need him Even Though it was late at night or early morning (Matthew 14:25); Jesus came walking on the sea (Matthew 14:25); when the disciples saw him walking on the sea (Matthew 14:25), they were troubled and thought he was a spirit (Matthew 14:26), and they cried out for fear (Matthew 14:26). Jesus quickly saw their fear and tried to calm his disciples (Matthew 14:27), saying, “Be of good cheer; It is I; be not afraid” (Matthew 14:27). Peter and his request Peter made an unnecessary request of Jesus, but we should ask the Lord for what we need and not for things that are unnecessary. Bid me come unto thee on the water (Matthew 14:28). Notice, Jesus did not compel or make any suggestion Peter should place himself in danger (Matthew 14:30), but Peter chose to put himself in danger (Matthew 14: 28) of drowning in the troubled waters (Matthew 14:24; Matthew 14:30). Jesus honored Peter's request by telling him to “come” (Matthew 14:29); so Peter got out of the safety of the ship (Matthew 14:22). It is not clear whether Peter was attempting to show he was able to walk on water as Jesus did or show his trust in Jesus, Peter was known for bad decisions and saying the wrong thing (Matthew 26:69-75; Mark 14:66-72), but whatever the motive, when Peter stepped out of the ship (Matthew 14:22) and starting toward Jesus (Matthew 14:29), he saw the wind blowing and the ship tossed with waves (Matthew 14: 24, 30); he was afraid (Matthew 14:30) and he starting to sink (Matthew 14:30); he cried out to Jesus to save him from his trouble, he was sinking (Matthew 14:30). Jesus help Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? (Matthew 14:31). And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased (Matthew 14:32). Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God (Matthew 14:33), (Matthew 9:22) There was a man sent from God (John 1:6) his name was John (John 1:6; Luke 1:13) For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight (Matthew 3:3). But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard: and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John (Luke 1:13). For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias sake, his brother Philip’s wife” (Matthew 14:3). John had told Herodotus that it was unlawful for him to marry his brother Philip wife. Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God (Mark 1:14). And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel (Mark 1:15). John was in prison when he heard the works of Christ (Matthew 11:2; Mark 1:14; Luke 3:20), he sent two of his disciples (Matthew 11:2), And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another (Matthew 11:3)? The things that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun” Is there anything whereof it may be said, see, this is new? It hath been already of old time, which was before us”. (Ecclesiastes 1:9,10) Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us (Hebrew 12:1). Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrew 11:1). Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrew 12:2a); Who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God (Hebrew 12:2b). For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise (Hebrew 4:4a) Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them, And on the seventh day God ended his work which he made; and he rested on the seventh day from his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. (Genesis 2:1,2,3). And God did rest the seventh day from all his works (Hebrew 4:4b). Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief (Hebrews 4:6): And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart” (Genesis 6:5, 6) And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord” (Genesis 6:7,8). The earth was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. Noah was said to be a just man and perfect man even though God determined his generation was corrupt before him (Genesis 6:9,11,12,). By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith (Hebrew 11:7). And the Lord said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation (Genesis 7:1). Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water (Hebrew 10: 22). Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) (Hebrew 10:23) For the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, (Genesis 2:5b) Only a mist went up to water the top of the ground (Genesis 2:6). Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he (Genesis 6:22). And the Lord said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation (Genesis 7:1). For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope (Romans 15:4). Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be like minded one toward another according to Christ Jesus (Roman 15:5). That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (Roman 15:6). For verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled (Matthew 5:18). When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost (John 19:30). Jesus answered and said unto him, what I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter (John 13:7). The Lack of Knowledge and Understanding. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born” (John 3:4)? The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat (John 6:52)? Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, Verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you (John 6:53). Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. (John 6:54) For the flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. (John 6:55) He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. (John 6:56) As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. (John 6:57) This is the bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. (John 6:58) These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum. (John 6:59) Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; Who can hear it (John 6:60)? Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me (John 7:16). If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. (John 7:17) He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him. (John 7:18)
